City to spend £70,000 on ‘floozy’

The fountains surrounding the “floozy” have been switched off

Up to £70,000 has been set aside for engineers to investigate and hopefully fix leaks in one of Birmingham’s most famous statues.

The giant statue of a woman bathing in Victoria Square, known as the Floozy in the Jacuzzi, has been switched off as it has been losing water.

Chris Rice, head of community museums for Birmingham City Council, said he was glad the money was being set aside.

“The money is to investigate leaks and hopefully to make repairs,” he said.

‘Important art’

“If I could switch the statue back on tomorrow, I would,” he said. “It looks terrible at the moment. It is arguably the most important piece of public art in the city.”

He acknowledged the investigation may throw up a need for more money than £70,000 to be spent on repairs.

“But it should not be impossible to get it working again,” he said.

The massive water feature was installed in 1993 when Victoria Square was pedestrianised and remodelled.

  1. Aha! That explains it!

I remember reading a newspaper article a couple of years ago about how leaky the fountain was and how it was running up the water costs, water wastage, taxpayers having to pay for the water, etc., etc.

So even though it will be expensive to fix it, in the long run, if they can manage to fix it right, it will pay for itself in water savings over time…

I agree with the guy quoted in the article, it looks terrrible at the moment, and what I really don’t like to see is people (and little kids) sitting all over it…I’m surprised ‘health and safety’ hasn’t come and put a stop to that yet…

  2. Kool post. No matter what, somethings will always remain mystery.

In fact, I myself have been trying to solve the mystery of the legend that forces you to have “earn it before having it”, for a wile now. Could not understand much though.

Let me know in case you get to understand the mystery of the Old Hound and the Legend

By the way, good writing style. I’d love to read more on similar topics
