Mourners gather for Khyra’s funeral

The service for Khyra Ishaq was held at the Salafi Mosque in Small Heath, Birmingham, more than six months after her death.

The youngster was pronounced dead after paramedics were called to her home in Handsworth, Birmingham, in the early hours of May 17.

Her mother, Angela Gordon, 34, and step-father Junaid Abuhamza, 30, both of Leyton Road, Handsworth, have been charged with her murder.

Khyra’s father, Ishaq Abu Zaire, was among a group of six men who carried the little girl’s coffin into the mosque, following the weekly Friday morning prayer session.

After the service, Mr Abu Zaire paid tribute to his “wonderful” and “beautiful” daughter, who can now “rest in peace”.

He also paid tribute to Khyra’s grandmother, Isolene Clark, 71, who was buried last week.

Mr Abu Zaire thanked staff at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Birmingham’s social services for their support after his daughter’s death.

The funeral had been delayed due to the police investigation into Khyra’s death.

Her body was finally released for burial last month.
